Derren makes a fair point. It is always easier to manipulate (I use the word deliberately) an intelligent audience than it is one of shall I say lesser intelect. Anyone that has ever entertained children will know that the little darlings take nothing for granted. They question everything and being psychologicaly imature are less easy to accept suggestions than intelligent adults.
Everyone can be fooled true, but the intention of the dark artist should not be to 'fool' audiences, this is doomed to failure. Neither is it, in my opinion, trying to make the audience suspend disbelief as many magicians maintain. Rather, it should be for us to allow audiences to accept our mindset. It is important tat on one level we actually believe that what we are doing is real. If we do not then how can we expect our audience to do likewise.
